“You’ll get nothin’ out of me,” the lanky man spat at Cora. Whipcord-taut tendons twisted in his neck as he craned his head to follow her. “I don’t know nothin’ and I ain’t talkin’.”

Cora resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Your associates have already talked, Mister Carstairs. There’s no point in stonewalling. You might as well tell me what I want to know, and we’ll let you go. I don’t want to hurt you, unlike what you want to do to my friends.”

“Tosh,” he snarled. “I know your type. You think I couldn’t tell the other bloke wasn’t the good cop? I’m no idiot. You’re the one as hauls off on little folk like me, givin’ us black eyes and broken ribs and kicks in the jewels until we squeal.”

Cora stopped in front of him and put her hands on her hips, squinting in disbelief. “Are you serious? You watch way too many movies. Or is that what you get off on, and you’re trying to goad me into it? Because it’s not going to work.”

Although it might, if she were honest. Interrogating Antony Kingston and his other friend, Kevin Vittle, had been an exercise in futility and frustration. She’d gotten nowhere fast, and neither had Jack.

They were adamant they weren’t working for any organization calling themselves the Evolved. That didn’t mean shit because it had become abundantly clear that the Evolved worked under so many names it was impossible to list them all. To put it lightly, they were reticent about what they intended to do with the information from all these magicals once they had it.

“Never b’lieved in this crap m’self, mind,” Carstairs continued as if he were reading Cora’s mind. “Not until Antony showed me what his old missus used to do to ’im. Sent shivers up m’spine, it did.”

Cora refused to be baited. She knew from Charlotte that the other woman and Antony had never been an item. They’d gone on one date, Charlotte had insisted and rolled her eyes to heaven. One date and she’d called it off, immediately convinced this was not the relationship for her.

You couldn’t have an equal relationship with someone who thought all magical people ought to be kept numbered and listed, could you? That was getting off on the wrong foot and staying there.

It turned out that this was why Charlotte hadn’t put much credence in Antony’s threats. He’d always espoused these beliefs but had never been in a position where he’d be listened to. More than anything, this convinced Cora that these three goons weren’t connected to the greater conspiracy at play.

Which meant they were wasting their time trying to prove it. They could have been spending this time hunting down more of the Evolved’s actual conspirators, maybe rooting out a few hiding in the British government while they were in the country. No, they were handling small-time crooks playing at being big-time movie villains, complete with the phony accents and overwrought banter.

Why did humanity have to suck
